School Programs
We offer interactive programs for various
grade levels, learning about the Colonial
period, how to read the Cherokee alphabet,
exploring the world around you, and living
at home during World War II.

Extended Classroom Programs
Our
extended classroom
programs
are correlated with the
Georgia Performance
Standards for each grade level. These
multi-disciplinary programs offer students
an interactive learning experience. A
teacher's guide with pre-visit and
post-visit activities
is sent prior to the program date. Storage Cabinet

Below are our extended classroom programs
for the 2006-2007 school year. Programs
are approximately 90 minutes in length.
Map Happenings
-
First Grade and up
Discover the importance of maps through
hands-on activities that teach directions,
map symbols, and other map skills.
Explore the area's history using you own
museum map.
Pioneer Pathways
-
Second Grade and up
Travel back to the time of the early
settlers and find out how life was very
different for families by exploring the
Pioneer exhibit. Relive the days of
the one-room schoolhouse as you learn your
lessons with slates and quill pens.
Cherokee Life and Legends
-
Second Grade and up
Examine the lives of the Cherokee people
through the Cherokee exhibit and by handling
the artifacts of their time, playing a
Cherokee games, and shooting the blowgun.
Civil War Soldier
-
Fourth and Fifth Grade
Relive the daily life of a Civil War soldier
as we explore the contents of his
haversack and learn what he thought about by
analyzing his letters home. Discuss
some of the issues that led to the war while viewing the museum's Civil War
exhibit on the conflict in Bartow County.

Technology Chronology

Fourth Grade
From the iron furnaces of Etowah to the
hydroelectric power of Allatoona Dam, Bartow
County history has been connected to
technology. Take a museum scavenger hunt to
find out more about farm implements and
carpets and who made them. Work on an
assembly line, see the light as electricity
comes to Georgia farms, and learn why the

Homefront, Battlefront

Fifth Grade
The first half of the 20th century changed
world history. Learn about the first global
war of the century and the changes it
wrought through newspaper articles and
Bartow County's participation in the war
effort. Get your ration stamps ready as the
Great Depression leads to World War Two.
Explore the battlefront with an interview of
a WWII veteran or local resident of that
era, explore the homefront with Victory
Gardens and rationing.
Museum Tour
-
All Ages
Learn about life in Bartow County from 1800
to the 1950s through a guided tour of the
History Center's Museum and an artifact
identification activity. This program last
one hour and is $3 per student. Maximum of
30 students.

Traveling Trunk Program
We also offer an exciting, hands-on traveling trunk program,
which is designed to augment a variety of
classroom lessons. A staff member from the
History Center will travel to your school
with an old trunk filled with artifacts
pertinent to a specific topic. The trunk is
unpacked and students are allowed to handle
some of the objects as the BHC instructor
provides a lesson related to the subject.
Program length: 45 minutes

$60.00 (per class - 25 students)

Below are our Traveling Trunk programs for
the 2006-2007 school year.
Old Fashioned Toys and Games Trunk
- Pre-K and up
Students will make an old fashioned spin top
and play old time games, such as Jacob's
Ladder, marbles, and whirligig.
Farm Life Trunk
- Pre-K and up
Compare the chores of children today with
those of farm children a long time ago,
learn the difference between farm animals
and zoo animals, and churn butter.
Pioneer Pathways Trunk
- K and up
Experience the daily life of pioneers at
work and play with artifacts and activities,
including butter churning and learning in a
one-room schoolhouse.
Cherokee Life
- Second Grade
and up
Arrowheads and pottery shards give clues
about the Cherokee way of life. Students try
their luck at shooting the blowgun.
Civil War Trunk
- Fourth Grade
and up
A haversack holds the soldier’s most prized
possessions and is his "home away from
home." Students get to sample hardtack.
World War II Trunk
- Fourth Grade
and up
From battlefront to home front, students
learn about V-mail, Victory Gardens, and
play rationing games.
